Thursday 13

For someone who loves ads as much as I, these came across my desk with perfect timing...I can share them with you!

Probably the most amazing and frightening thing about the following 13 ads is that they were made not that many years ago.  When you have read them through you will see how some characteristics have affected our society...we have read too many ads.

Silly me, I thought all the doctors took an oath to work for our good?

The above ad is really scary...no wonder we have trouble with our health as baby boomers.

The small print reads:  Though she was a tiger lady, our hero didn’t have to fire a shot to floor her. After one look at his Mr. Leggs slacks, she was ready to have him walk all over her. That noble styling sure soothes the savage heart! If you’d like your own doll-to-doll carpeting, hunt up a pair of these he-man Mr. Leggs slacks. Such as our new automatic washwear blend of 65% “Dacron®” and 35% rayon – incomparably wrinkle-resistant.About $12.95 at plush-carpeted stores.

Oh thank you Santa!

The above ad partially reads:  “this young man is 11 months old -and he isn’t our youngest customer by any means. For 7-Up is so pure,so wholesome, you can even give it to babies and feel good about it. By the way, Mom, when it comes to toddlers - if they like to be coaxed to drink their milk, try this: Add 7-Up to the milk in equal parts, pouring the 7-Up gently into the milk. It’s a wholesome combination - and it works!

Hmmmmm!!!!

Just try it and see what happens....

Great philosophy...hmmm...

That is what all those suppliments are good for.

These ads took my breath away...

  2. Holy Moly! I don't know if I am more angry at those ads or feeling old since I was alive when most of those ran.

    Have a great Thursday!

  3. I love your post! I am a huge fan of old ads, they make me laugh. I wonder when I look at ads today what people in 50 years will think about what we are doing now.
    Thanks for a great read.

  4. Grrr. I'm so glad I didn't have to live through so much of this chauvinism. It was mostly on the way out before I became politically aware.

  5. OMG Can you imagine if something like that was posted today? Oh my word. We've come a long way, baby. *wink Happy T13!

  6. True story - my mom used to put Coke in my bottle when I was a toddler. Now I'm so addicted to caffeine, I can't imagine ever giving it up! I have switched to diet, however.

  7. OMG! Those are so hard to imagine as being acceptable.

  8. It's not amazing that these ads create comments, just think in 2019 women will have been actual "citizens" here in Canada for a whole 100 years.

  9. To think these were acceptable in the past. Makes you wonder what's out there now.

    Mine's here.

  10. I knew these would get good comments... but have any men commented? Hmmmm. Ha. Mostly joking, but this stuff obviously strikes a chord with the ladies. I just shake my head and give thanks for all the women (and men who supported them) who came before and paved the way for the options and choices I have now.

Great post, Ma. And thanks for not putting Coke in my bottle!

  11. OK. Here is a comment from a man! Even I was shocked by these silly ads. "Like the harder a wife works, the cuter she looks!" These copy writers were not looking for points with the women.

I find it hard to believe that these ads were even considered acceptable. Good post, Shirley.

  12. In a society overflowing with over-the-top PC-ness, I find these ads quite hilarious. The question is whether they worked or not...not whether they offend "modern sensibilities".

Advertising is not intended to reflect what we may decide to believe in 50 or 60-years time, but what can the consumer be convinced to believe TODAY.

If they worked to sell product then these ads were successful, if not then they failed as ads. Their content notwithstanding, that is how they should be gauged.

So lighten up and simply enjoy them as today's comic relief.

    1. Thank you for your comments... amazed to see someone reading my blog 4+ years later but good to get your input.

It is a sad commentary that people are not living by principle but by emotions. And that they allow others to influence their thinking so strongly.

This reminds me of a quote I just saw on a bumper yesterday:
"What luck for rulers that men do not think."

That makes it easier for the advertising industry!
